Sheikh Mohammed launches Dubai Metro Blue Line tunnelling works
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has just shared he has inaugurated tunnelling work on the Dubai Metro Blue Line. Sheikh Mohammed stated that the major new project, which costs a whopping 20.5 billion dirhams, will serve nine vital areas with a population of 1,000,000. It aims to reduce congestion by 20%. It will feature 14 stations – 7 will be elevated and 4 underground. Three of these stations will be transfer stations. In total, the Dubai Metro Blue Line will stretch 30km – 14.5km will be above gound, and 15.5km will be underground. Sheikh Mohammed ended his post by saying, ‘We are the world’s most future-ready city. Whoever bets on Dubai, bets on the future.’

Sheikh Hamdan unveils plan to adopt agentic AI in Dubai’s private sector
In yet another push to future-proof its economy, Dubai has unveiled a sweeping initiative to accelerate the adoption of autonomous AI across its private sector, reinforcing its ambition to lead the world in next-generation technologies. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai made the announcement this week via a social media post. The Crown Prince of Dubai stated that the goal was for ‘Dubai to become the world’s leading city in adopting these technologies economically and commercially – giving us a new competitive edge for the future’. Sheikh Hamdan stressed that the objective was to empower companies to adopt the latest technologies to boost and expand business volumes and reshape the city to make the economy one of the best in the world in adopting agentic AI technologies.
UAE marks 50th anniversary of its armed forces
On May 6, the UAE celebrates Military Union Day, also known as Armed Forces Unification Day, commemorating the decision to unify the nation’s armed forces. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic milestone. To mark the occasion, UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a post on his official X account stating he was extending his deepest appreciation to the courageous men and women who continue to safeguard the security and stability of our nation and the safety of its people. He added, ‘Your unwavering dedication and sacrifice is a source of endless pride to everyone who calls the UAE home, and I congratulate you on the anniversary of this defining moment in our history.’

UAE students returned to distance learning
On May 4, the Ministry of Education took the decision to switch to distance learning for UAE schools from Tuesday, May 5, 2026, until Friday, May 8, 2026. It applied for students, teachers, and administrative staff across nurseries and all public and private schools nationwide. The Ministry added that the directive is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the educational community and stated that ‘The situation will be reviewed on Friday, 8 May 2026, and the period may be extended if necessary.’
The announcement on whether students will return to school next week is yet to be announced.
Etihad Rail’s first passenger station is fully ready
Etihad Rail is a huge megaproject in the making, and this week it completed a milestone by completing its first passenger station in Fujairah. His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah; Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah; and Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail, recently visited the station to inspect the facilities.
Emirates remains the world’s most profitable airline after record-breaking year
The Dubai-based airline has retained its position as the world’s most profitable airline after posting record-breaking financial results for 2025-26. The airline announced a profit before tax of Dhs22.8 billion (US$6.2 billion), marking a 7 per cent increase on last year and the strongest financial performance in the airline industry during the reporting period. The wider Emirates Group – which includes the aviation services company – also reported record results, with overall profits reaching Dhs24.4 billion (US$6.6 billion). According to the newly released annual report, the airline carried 53.2 million passengers over the past financial year, while its global network expanded to 152 cities across 80 countries.
Dubai Airport boosts flights as airspace reopens
Dubai International Airport has entered its next phase of recovery, following the lifting of precautionary airspace restrictions. This means more flights, more passengers, and a quicker return to normalcy. As the skies open, Dubai Airports is focused on ramping up flight movements at DXB. Though the airport’s capacity remains tightly linked to the availability of airspace in the region, things are moving fast in the right direction. The recent disruptions have shown just how critical regional coordination is for keeping airports like DXB functioning at their best, but with steady collaboration, the airport is primed for a solid recovery.

Emirates has restored 96% of its global flight network after disruption
Emirates is edging back to full strength, with 96% of its global network now restored following recent disruption – bringing the airline close to a near-complete resumption of its worldwide flight schedule. The airline has progressively rebuilt its operations over the past weeks, reinstating services across key regions including the Americas, Europe, Africa, West Asia, the Middle East and GCC, as well as the Far East and Australasia. Today, Emirates is operating to 137 destinations across 72 countries, supported by more than 1,300 weekly flights.

New parking system announced at these malls
Parking in Dubai’s malls just got a tech upgrade. Parkin is rolling out smart solutions across Dubai Mall, Dubai Hills Mall, and Marina Mall, making sure every car finds its perfect spot while PoD (People of Determination) spaces stay ready for those who need them.

Completion date revealed: Bridge connecting Dubai Harbour and Sheikh Zayed Road
The new bridge linking Sheikh Zayed Road with Dubai Harbour now has a completion date: August 2026. According to a sign situated next to the bridge in Dubai Harbour, the construction is 85% complete and it will be ready for use in August 2026. The notice also states that it’s cutting travel time from 20 minutes to 3 minutes to Sheikh Zayed Road. The Dhs431 million project will have two lanes in each direction, spanning 1.5km long and will have a capacity of 6,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
