The new Sharjah tunnel project aims to improve Sharjah-Dubai traffic on one of the busiest commuter routes in the UAE
If your daily routine involves crossing between Sharjah and Dubai, you’ll know Sharjah-Dubai traffic can be unpredictable at the best of times. Now, a new Sharjah tunnel project is hoping to make that journey a little smoother. Sharjah has unveiled plans for a dual underground tunnel beneath Al Taawun Road, with the goal of easing congestion and improving traffic flow along one of the UAE’s busiest commuter corridors.
A major upgrade for a busy route
The proposed tunnel will run beneath Al Taawun Road, a key link between Sharjah and Dubai used by thousands of commuters every day. The project forms part of a wider infrastructure package worth Dhs750 million and is designed to tackle congestion along the stretch connecting Al Taawun Street and Al Nahda Bridge. Announced by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the project is focused on improving mobility between the neighbouring emirates and making everyday journeys more efficient.

What’s changing?
The new development will feature two separate underground tunnels, one for inbound traffic and one for outbound traffic. By moving vehicles beneath the existing corridor, the project aims to create a more continuous flow and reduce pressure on surrounding roads. It’s a move that could make a noticeable difference for residents who regularly travel between Sharjah and Dubai, particularly during peak hours.
Why the monument was removed
If you’ve recently noticed changes around Al Taawun Roundabout, there’s a reason. Technical studies found that the foundations of the roundabout’s landmark monument extended underground and would interfere with the tunnel’s construction. The monument has therefore been removed temporarily and will be redesigned and reinstated once the project is complete.
Better access across the city
Beyond reducing traffic, the tunnel is also expected to improve access to key destinations, including Expo Centre Sharjah, making journeys quicker and more direct for visitors and residents alike.
